DEFENCE INNOVATION PRODUCTION

Global Frontier in Defense Innovation

Major Technology Trends (2025)

1. Artificial Intelligence & Autonomy
AI is increasingly central—powering autonomous drones, unmanned vehicles, robotic systems, and real‑time battlefield decision-making. It’s also driving enhancements in electronic warfare and combat training simulations.

2. Directed-Energy & Hypersonic Weapons

Directed-energy systems such as laser weapons offer high precision and low per-shot cost compared to missiles. Countries investing heavily include Australia, the UK, and Israel.

Hypersonic missiles, capable of exceeding Mach 5, are rapidly advancing and actively reshaping global arms competition.

3. Cyber and Communication Resilience
Integrated cyber defense platforms are being deployed to detect and mitigate digital threats. AI-driven, self-healing tactical networks and resilient Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) communications—including IoT and satellite relays—are enhancing robustness in warfare.

4. Quantum and Blockchain Technologies
Quantum computing and secure quantum communication are under exploration for encrypting and protecting sensitive military communications. Similarly, blockchain is being adopted to strengthen supply chain transparency and data integrity.

Defense Innovation Spotlight: India

Indigenous Innovation Ecosystems
The Indian ADITI scheme, under iDEX, is fueling R&D in strategic tech areas—from AI and quantum technologies to underwater surveillance—with grants of up to ₹25 crore per project.

Counter-Drone Defense Systems

Indrajaal by Grene Robotics: An AI-based, autonomous anti‑drone “dome” that monitors and neutralizes threats across 4,000 sq km.

Bhargavastra by Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd: A ground-based micro-missile system tested successfully in early 2025, capable of intercepting drone swarms up to 2.5 km away.

Defense Production Growth
India’s domestic defense production has reached an all-time high, rising from ~30–35% in 2014–15 to ~65% in 2024–25. Exports have soared over 34 fold, with private firms now playing a significant role.
